The complexion can be moisturized by every cosmetic – a rich and hydrating cream, a serum and a preparation aimed at soothing irritations. Each of them contains moisturizing substances in proportions appropriate for the type of skin. The reason is simple. Each complexion type needs regular hydration to a greater or lesser extent. Nevertheless, not every cream has been given the name “moisturizing”. How does the moisturizing cream work and what ingredients it contains?
How does a moisturizer work?
Moisturizing cream does not introduce water into the epidermis but prevents its loss. The moisturising process boils is responsible for strengthening of skin barriers that impede the evaporation of water and increase the ability to bind it in the skin. The moisturizing cream contains little oils, it is quickly absorbed and leaves the skin soft, smooth and firm.
What ingredients are contained in a moisturizing cream?
The most popular ingredients contained in the moisturizing cream are:
- hyaluronic acid,
- collagen,
- glycerin,
- veseline,
- paraffin.
Hyaluronic acid together with collagen and elastin co-create the skin’s structure. Although the hyaluronic acid molecules in cosmetics are too large to enter the skin, it is considered one of the most effective moisturizing ingredients. Its molecules form a protective water film on the skin and act in the epidermis. When they penetrate through its top layers, they bind water inside.
Collagen occurs in the connective tissue and is responsible for the elasticity of the epidermis. In moisturizing creams, a collagen hydrolyzate is used, which produces a film preventing water loss on the skin.
Glycerin penetrates through the stratum corneum of the epidermis to the intercellular space. In creams, it is used both as a moisturizing substance and as an emollient that prevents drying of the skin. However, at higher concentration, it dehydrates the skin.
Vaseline is a mixture of hydrocarbons. It softens and smoothes out the skin and prevents it from drying out. However, paraffin is obtained from crude oil. Because hydrocarbons contained in it also exist in cellular cement, paraffin does not sensitize.
